Build Up & Torch Down
“Build Up and Torch Down” are two common methods used in roofing construction. These methods are employed to install roofing materials and create a watertight seal. Here’s a brief explanation of each technique:
Build Up: The Build Up method involves layering different materials to create a durable and weather-resistant roof. Typically, it starts with a base layer of insulation or a vapor barrier, followed by alternating layers of bitumen or asphalt and reinforcing materials such as fiberglass or polyester. These layers are built up to achieve the desired thickness and strength. Finally, a protective layer, such as gravel or mineral granules, may be added to shield the roof from UV radiation and provide additional durability.
Torch Down: Torch Down, also known as modified bitumen roofing, is a technique that uses modified bitumen sheets for roofing installation. These sheets consist of a blend of bitumen and synthetic materials, which provide enhanced strength and flexibility. The torch down method involves heating the modified bitumen sheets with a torch to create a molten state, allowing them to adhere to the roof substrate. As the material cools and solidifies, it forms a watertight seal.
